NWU says JPS workers concerned about jobs, as company looks at outsourcing some services

The National Workers Union NWU has called an all island delegates meeting for Jamaica Public Service employees for Friday.   NWC General  Secretary Granville Valentine says the meeting is to discuss plans by the JPS to outsource some services.

Mr. Valentine told IRIE FM News that he learnt the issue was discussed with senior managers  at a meeting Wednesday night.  The NWU represents all technical workers and clerical groups at JPS.   Mr. Valentine says the company has not denied there is a plan to outsource services.

However he says the union has not been getting information from JPS.   Mr. Valentine explains that workers are concerned about their jobs.

Meanwhile the Jamaica Public Service says its exploring the outsourcing of its meter reading services.     JPS Director of Corporate Communications Winsome Callum says this is one option being looked at as the company seeks to reduce the cost of provide service to its customers.       She explains that the company wants to ensure its carrying out its services in the most efficient and cost effective way.
