ODPEM & Met Office watching TS Harvey

by August 18th, 2017

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (Odpem) is warning of poor weather conditions over the weekend, as a result of Tropical Storm Harvey.

Odpem says Tropical Storm Harvey should pass well south of Jamaica on Sunday into Monday.

It adds, that while it is not predicted that Jamaica will experience tropical storm conditions, the weather condition across the island could deteriorate.

With this, will come the possibility of poor sea conditions on the south coast, flooding in low lying areas, and landslides in hilly terrains.

Odpem is advising residents to evacuate from low lying and flood prone areas in the case of flooding and avoid flooded water ways, including gullies and fords.

As the Met Service and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management monitor the movements of Tropical Storm Harvey, at least two mayors say they are ready for any eventuality.

Tropical Storm Harvey, which dumped rains and lashed the leeward Islands with heavy winds is projected to pass well south of the island.

The Met Service is forecasting that southern parishes could be in for some rains.

Clarednon was hit hard earlier this year, when torrential rains resulted in massive dislocation.

Chairman of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation Winston Maragh says the parish is ready for any eventuality

And, Chairman of the St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation, Derrick Sangster says the parish is in a state of preparedness as personnel are on standby to clear roads, and officers of the corporation are on alert to assist if the need arises.

He says if the situation deteriorates, the emergency plan will be activated.
