Opposition calls for comprehensive transport plan, following JUTC driver strike

by September 24th, 2019

Opposition spokesman on Transport, Mikael Phillips, has called on the government to come up with a comprehensive transport plan.

He cited the problems caused by the strike taken by some Jamaica Urban Transit Company drivers today, leaving several commuters stranded.

The strike was in response to the killing of a JUTC driver, which it’s reported may have been a reprisal for the stabbing death of a taxi operator by a JUTC driver, yesterday.

Speaking in parliament today, Phillips condemned the incidents that caused the deaths of the 2 men and called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the 2 murders.

He noted the impact of the strike on schools and businesses.

He asked about the long awaited Road Traffic Act, with regulations that would help mitigate situations like these.

In response, Transport Minister Robert Montague said the regulation were being finalised.
