by May 23rd, 2022

The Opposition has expressed concern over the number of confirmed cases of monkeypox in Africa, Europe and North America.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently indicated that over 80 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in 15 countries.

The WHO also stated that another 50 suspected cases are being investigated, and warned that more cases are likely to be reported.

Speaking with IRIE FM news, Opposition Spokesperson on Health, Dr. Morais Guy says Jamaica must be vigilant.

Noting that the United States of America recorded a case of monkeypox last week, Dr. Guy states that Jamaica cannot afford to become complacent.

According to the United Kingdom’s National Health Service, monkeypox is a rare viral infection, which is usually mild, and from which most people recover in a few weeks.

The virus does not spread easily between people and the risk to the wider public is said to be very low.
