Opposition Member of Parliament for South ST Catherine, Fitz Jackson will meet with the Jamaica Bankers Association JBA to address concerns raised by bankers in relation to the bill he initiated in Parliament to amend the Banking Services Act.
Since the Bill was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, some concerns have been raised about aspects of the Bill which relate to banking fees on depositors.
Mr. Jackson says he will meet with the bankers to hear their concerns, but that he remains committed to ensuring that the interests of the depositors are protected.
He adds that the further consultation is to ensure that while the Bill protects the interest of depositors, no unintended effect on the banking sector occurs. The meeting which will take place at the Parliament tomorrow is expected to have in attendance the President of the JBA along with the heads of the major banks in Jamaica.
The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica PSOJ has said it is concerned about the proposed amendment to the Banking Services Act which seeks to regulate price setting in banks.
The PSOJ says it sees this as a retrograde step, where once again the state will return to pricing controls.
