The Opposition PNP is calling for a one month delay, in the implementation of the new property tax.
In responding on behalf of the Opposition, Peter Bunting, said the property tax was hastily put together, and imposed by stealth.
He stated, that the Opposition cannot support this continued approach by the government.
In calling for the one month suspension of the property tax, Mr. Bunting called for the Parliamentary Committee on proposed tax measures to convene and deal with all the issues related to property tax.
Mr. Bunting told the House, that any major reform requires adequate consultation and public education.
He said the parliament must be presented with documents to give members a solid understanding of the economic consequences, and the real burden of the taxation on different socio-economic groups.
He said the reports should come before a vote on the new taxes.
Mr. Bunting said the parliamentary committee would submit a report to parliament.
Mr. Bunting noted that the Finance Minister pointed out that the valuation used was done in 2013.
He explained that the PNP Administration did not implement the new regime because it would have been burdensome.
He reiterated that the raft of tax measures are helping to pay for the $1.5 m tax break promised by the Jamaica Labour Party in the election campaign.
He said there has been about $30 b in new taxes to fund the $1.5 campaign promise.
