Opposition PNP seeks legal advice on Montague’s handling of gun licence appeals

by August 14th, 2018

The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) says it has sought legal advice about the 29 gun license approvals, granted by former National Security Minister, Robert Montague, after they were rejected by the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA).

Mr. Montague had announced last week, that a group he empanelled to review decisions of the FLA, made the recommendations for the granting of the licenses.

In a release today, Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Fitz Jackson, says there is no provision in the law that allowed Mr. Montague to put together a group to review the recommendations of the FLA.

The Opposition says this is tantamount to an abuse of power with serious consequences for the nation’s security.

Mr. Jackson says, there are several aspects of Mr. Montague’s rebuttal that are troubling and need to be reviewed and settled in Jamaica’s national security interest.

He says Mr. Montague needs to be transparent and immediately disclose the names of the panel which he empowered to review recommendations from the FLA.

The opposition spokesman is also calling for the full disclosure of their terms of reference and their status in being privy to sensitive national security information from the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

The opposition spokesman on national security says the party considers the actions of the then minister as reckless and a serious breach of protocol concerning national security.

Mr. Jackson says he is concerned as to how any character being reported on by the police as an individual with adverse traces could be described by the minister of national security as a national security asset.

He also accused Mr. Montague of making unauthorized disclosures to the RJR/Gleaner group.

The opposition spokesman says for all his transgressions, Mr. Montague is clearly unfit for cabinet membership and the Prime Minister ought to remove him.
