Opposition says gov’t should extend 20% subsidy on electricity until end of fiscal year

by April 7th, 2022

Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Phillip Paulwell, is calling on the government to extend the 20% subsidy on electricity, until the end of the fiscal year.

The government is subsidizing 20% of the cost of electricity for persons who use less than 200-kilowatt hours monthly. The subsidy starts this month and continues until July.

However, Mr. Paulwell says the subsidy should be extended until next year, as high electricity costs could persist for more than a year.

Mr. Paulwell also warned that electricity costs could soar even higher at the end of this month.

He expressed concern that customers are already seeing increases of up to 50% on their bills.
