Opposition says new property tax measures will lead to other price hikes

by March 31st, 2017

Opposition spokesperson on land, Sophia Frazer Binns says the new property tax measures that take effect tomorrow will have a domino effect, causing price hikes in other sectors.

Mrs Frazer Binns says the latest property tax hike, ranges from 3 hundred to over one thousand percent.

She says the increases will put many farmers under pressure and they will have to pass this on in the pricing of basic farm produce.

According to her ,  there will be a spike in the cost to those living in rented houses and a hardening of relationship between tenants and their landlords.

Additionally, the opposition spokesperson says a further negative and direct impact of this increase,  will be its  effect on people’s ability to pay property taxes and its impact on the ability of the poorest Jamaicans to buy a house or land.

Mrs Frazer-Binns says the taxes imposed by the government fly in the face of the much talked about economic expansion, and at a time when many persons are already over burdened.
