Opposition senators call for Wheatley to be sacked

by June 29th, 2018

The Andrew Holness led government has come under more pressure from the Opposition, this time in the Senate, to remove the energy minister from his post in the wake of corruption allegations at Petrojam.

The Prime Minster has already indicated that Cabinet is in the process of collecting the facts as to the situation at Petrojam, and that cabinet will not act on incorrect information.

Speaking in the Senate today, Opposition Senator Lambert Brown called for a state of emergency against public corruption.

He lamented that the millions of dollars spent by Petrojam would have served better use, in getting much needed resources for the police, to aid in the fight against crime.

The comments were made while the Senate deliberated on the resolution to extend the state of emergency in the St. Catherine north police division.

Some government senators raised objection to the move by the opposition, saying the issue of Petrojam was a departure from the resolution on the state of emergency.

Mr. Brown asserted that the issues were connected, as a vote for the state of emergency implied a vote for support of a government, that was not acting to eliminate corruption.
