Opposition Spokesman on Health calls on gov’t to set aside money from the budget to support the NHF

by May 11th, 2022

Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Morais Guy is calling on the government to set aside money from the budget to support the National Health Fund, NHF.

The NHF is funded by a 20 per cent Special Consumption Tax charged on tobacco products and 5 per cent of earnings collected by the National Insurance Scheme, NIS.

Speaking in the Sectoral Debate in Parliament yesterday (May 10), Dr. Guy said the NHF must be preserved and maintained to ensure that it can meet the growing demand for prescription drug subsidies.

He noted that new legislation could lead to a reduction in the funding from the tobacco consumption tax.

Meantime, Dr. Guy called for an update on the proposed National Health Insurance Scheme, noting that the scheme could reduce the burden on the NHF.
