Opposition Spokesperson on Labour urges Gov’t to take care of foundational principles that guide development of country’s modern labour movement

by May 23rd, 2022

Opposition Spokesperson on Labour and Social Security, Senator Floyd Morris warns that while Jamaica has achieved several accomplishments to protect the country’s workers, steps must be taken to ensure that these successes are not eroded.

Senator Morris’ comments come, as the country observes today as Labour Day under the theme: ‘Re-igniting a Nation For Greatness – Protect Our Heritage and Environment’.

In light of recent unrest among several public sector groups in the past weeks, Senator Morris says he fears that Jamaica could move backwards if it does not take care of the foundational principles that have guided the development of the country’s modern labour movement.

He says workers and their trade unions cannot be conceived as passive contributors to the Government’s ongoing reclassification and compensation review system but must be seen as a pre-eminent part of the negotiating and bargaining process.
