Opposition to host anti-crime consultation

by July 18th, 2019

After months of calling on government to meet with stakeholders to tackle crime, the opposition has decided to host a national consultation to develop crime fighting strategies later this month.

The consultation will be held on Tuesday July 30, at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Downtown Kingston.

President of the Peoples National Party (PNP) Dr. Peter Phillips made the announcement this morning at the party’s second anti-corruption protest held in Sam Sharp Square, Montego Bay, St. James.

Earlier this week, Dr. Phillips chastised the government for its overuse of the emergency measures to tackle crime, saying it was not the best use of resources, and not the solution to the problem.

Dr. Phillips said his party has been calling for a meeting with the Andrew Holness led administration to discuss a plan, but his call has fallen on deaf ears.

Noting that he cannot wait much longer, he says various stakeholders including the church are being invited to make suggestions at the consultation.
