Petrojam in talks to ensure oil security amid Russia-Ukraine war

by March 14th, 2022

State-owned oil refinery, Petrojam says, it is in talks with stakeholders, to ensure that the country’s fuel supply, is uninterrupted, during the Russia-Ukraine war.

Since the war began in February, the prices of some products including, timber, food and fuel have increased globally.

Earlier this month, Minister of Energy, Daryl Vaz, said the country’s fuel arrangements are not in jeopardy, despite the instability in eastern Europe.

In a statement yesterday, Petrojam’s general manager, Winston Watson concurred, noting that current fuel supply arrangements remain intact, and the refinery is actively pursuing additional suppliers.

He added, that a team from the refinery is in the United States of America, attending an annual fuel conference, to meet with oil traders and other national oil companies, in an effort, to secure additional options for both crude oil and refined products.

Noting that Petrojam currently receives crude from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Barbados, Mr. Watson said, since the Ukraine crisis, the refinery has reached out to other countries including Guyana, Argentina and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, to meet the impending demand.

He noted, that Petrojam has additional crude oil storage overseas, where up to one million barrels of crude oil can be stored and then shipped to Petrojam in required quantities for processing.

He said alternative storage arrangements are also being explored.
