by November 24th, 2019

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced several measures to stem the country’s crime problem and indiscipline on the nation’s roads.

Speaking at the Jamaica Labour Party’s 76th Annual Conference at the National Arena in Kingston, Mr. Holness said the measures will come into effect next year.

Noting that the European Union has provided some €20 m to the country, Mr. Holness says some 4 more communities will be added to the already existing Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) will which help to reduce crime in the island.

He added that he has also commissioned a study, to guide the necessary legislative changes needed within the country, and to determine social programmes needed to make Jamaica a more loving society.

Turning to the issue of indiscipline on the nation’s roadways, Mr. Holness says enhanced measures will be put in place to nab those who breach the road traffic act.

He says cameras will be installed at traffic lights across the country.

Noting that there is a serious issue with transport operators, especially in the corporate area, Mr. Holness says he has instructed Commissioner of Police, Major General, Anthony Anderson to ensure that half way tree, which is a major source of chaos, is one of the first areas to be addressed.
