PNP calls on Govt to address nurses discontent

by November 23rd, 2017

The Opposition People’s National Party is urging the government to speedily address the disruption in the health system.

It says there seems to be a stalemate between the government and the Nurses Association of Jamaica, that has resulted in the disruption of services at public health care facilities.

The opposition says with scores of nurses reported as being sick, it is affecting the delivery of care.

In a statement, the PNP says the nurses are suffering from the acute conditions of stagnation in the discussions, regarding the salary negotiations for the 2017/ 2019 contract period, which have been stalled indefinitely.

The opposition says the offer by the government is an insult to the hard working nurses, who sacrifice daily to preserve the well-being of the nation.

It says it stands in solidarity with the nurses and demands that the government shows them the respect they deserve, by resuming   wage talks in an effort to make a meaningful offer.

The party says the WHO recommends that 6 percent of GDP be spent on health care and currently only 3 percent of the government’s budget is allocated to health care.
