PNP calls on Ombudsman, Police to probe reports of intimidation in East Portland

The People’s National Party (PNP) is calling on the police, to conduct investigations following reports of intimidation and threats, made against some residents of Berrydale, in East Portland.

The party says, it has received reports that during a visit to the area by members of the leadership of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) rafters were threatened, that there would be retaliation if they did not support the JLP’s East Portland by-election candidate, Ann-Marie Vaz.

In a release issued today, the (PNP) says, it finds the reports disturbing, and as such, is calling on the relevant authorities, including the Political Ombudsman, to investigate the matter.

Noting that fear is engulfing sections of the community, the party says, it is also calling on the Commissioner of Police, Major General Antony Anderson, to initiate a swift investigation into these reports, and to provide adequate security coverage for the areas targeted.

PNP General Secretary Julian Robinson told Irie FM News, that residents who have been threatened have been urged to report the matter to the police.

The PNP says an official report will be made to the office of the political ombudsman, about the matter.

Meanwhile, Political Ombudsman Donna Parchment Brown says she was not aware of the issue.

She, however, noted that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate, for the East Portland by-election, Ann-Marie Vaz has now signed the political code of conduct.

This after Mrs. Vaz and her immediate representatives were a no show at the official signing in Portland on Monday.

Mrs. Parchment Brown says, the code of conduct, which forbids inflammatory and discriminatory remarks on the political platform, was signed by Mrs. Vaz under the supervision of Custos of the parish, Lincoln Thaxter, this morning (Mar 22).

The People’s National Party (PNP) candidate, Damion Crawford signed the code of conduct on Monday.
