by July 2nd, 2018

The St. Andrew South police are appealing to residents of Seaview Gardens to come forward with any information they may have, about the shooting death of a teen girl, in the community on Saturday.

Dead is 15 year old Olivia Gonzalez, of Kiwi Pathway, in Seaview Gardens.

She was a student of Tarrant High School.

Reports are that about 9:05 p.m., Olivia was among a group of friends who gathered near her home, handling a gun, when it allegedly went off, hitting her.

She was pronounced dead at hospital. No one else was hurt in the incident.

Head of the Division Superintendent Gary Francis, says residents have been tight-lipped about the incident.

He says investigators are looking into how the girl came to be in possession of the weapon.

The police chaplaincy unit and community safety and security branch are offering grief counselling and other support to relatives of the teen.

Meantime, end of year examinations were affected for some students of the Tarrant High School in Kingston, who have been grieving the death of a schoolmate.

Grief counselling is being offered to classmates and friends of 15-year-old Olivia Gonzalez, who was shot and killed at the weekend in her community of Seaview Gardens.

Principal of Tarrant High Paul Hall says examinations which were scheduled for earlier today had to be postponed, as some grade eight students, are finding it hard to cope with Olivia’s death.

He says further support will be offered by counsellors from the education ministry.

He says Jamaica has lost a brilliant mind, as Olivia was placed first in her class in the December examinations.

Mr. Hall, who visited with Olivia’s family earlier today to offer support, is calling for an end to the culture of silence on illegality in the country.
