Police commissioner defends police use of force amid recent criticism

by February 24th, 2022

Police Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson, has sought to defend the circumstances under which police have used excessive force, in the wake of recent criticism.

The Independent Commission of Investigations, Indecom, had recently expressed concern about the number of incidents that involved members of the security forces, especially fatal shootings resulting from confrontations between cops and alleged criminals.

Commissioner Anderson sought to explain that, a recommendation for charge against a police officer does not mean that the cop will be convicted.

He noted that in 2020 Indecom investigated 657 reports, with charges being recommended for only 14 of these.

Similarly in 2021, 764 cases were investigated with 14 of them leading to recommendations for charges.

He said in cases where cops are accused in a fatal shooting, it does not mean they are guilty.

He is assuring JCF members that they have the support of the high command as they carry out their lawful duties.

He is also urging cops to utilise their superior training when faced with violence.
