Police Protection For Sav Hospital Staff

The Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA) has initiated measures aimed restoring services at the Savanna-La-Mar General Hospital in Westmoreland following yesterday’s public protest over the questionable killing of two men.

The incident took place at premises in close proximity to the hospital and the state of unrest that followed, spilled over onto the hospital compound where protestors set an out-of-use ambulance and a building containing old hospital records on fire.

The Authority says the Fire Brigade was prevented from putting out the fires.

Following an on-the-spot assessment of the situation this afternoon (August 15, 2015), chairman of the WRHA, Calvin G. Brown held discussions with the police and health personnel.

He says in a statement, that while there is an uneasy calm in the town, it is imperative that the hospital is able to provide care for its patients while seeing to the safety of staff; consequently, it has been agreed that the police will provide security to enable the staff to function.

The WRHA has also provided transportation to see to the safe movement of staff until there is an assurance that their safety is not jeopardised.

Mr Brown states that the authorities are watching the situation and hope that order will be restored in the town so that normalcy can be returned to the delivery of healthcare.

Irate residents this morning protested against the killing of two men last evening, metres away from the Savanna-La-Mar Hospital.

The residents claim that the father and son were shot by the police however, police say the men were killed by gunmen.

Dead are 43-year old, Ricardo Sinclair, and his 18-year-old son, Ajani of Barracks Road in Gully Bank District, Westmoreland.
