Portmore Mayor calls for more fogging due to increase in mosquitoes

by May 5th, 2017

Residents of Portmore, St. Catherine are calling for the authorities to increase fogging in the municipality.

This, as they are confronted with an increase in the mosquito population following recent heavy rains.

Mayor of Portmore, Leon Thomas says the Portmore Municipality wants the Health Ministry to pay special  attention to the city,  as the residents are under, what he calls, a severe mosquito  attack.

He says, given the fact that the Zika virus is still a threat to Jamaica, and the first case was found in Portmore, he is concerned about a possible increase in cases of the mosquito borne disease.

Mayor Thomas says, the matter needs immediate attention.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Health, has confirmed that it plans to intensify its fogging programme in Portmore and surrounding communities.

Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton says, the ministry has established fogging teams in the city.

He points out that given the recent rains, the ministry anticipated an increase in the breeding of mosquitoes, especially in Portmore and the ministry is trying to deal with the matter promptly.

Dr. Tufton says one of the main focuses of the teams is ridding the areas of breeding sites.
