“Prepare for worst; pray for best” 2017 Hurricane Season starts

by June 1st, 2017

That’s the message from Director of the Met Office Evan Thompson, while speaking today (Jun 1) at a press conference in Kingston to mark the start of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Mr. Thomson says the Met Service is in accordance with the forecast from the National Oceanic Atmosphere Administration, that this year could see above normal hurricane activity.

He says despite criticism from Jamaicans about what they deemed premature warnings issued last year, the international community has commended the Jamaican authorities for their pro-active action.

The El Nino phenomenon is one of several factors that contribute to hurricane activity and this year is no different.

He says the current forecast is for weak systems.

Mr. Thompson says the prediction is for 11 to 17 named storms, with 2 to 4 being major hurricanes.

He is reminding citizens that even one surface trough is capable of inflicting over $2 b worth of damage and destroy livelihoods.

In the meantime, the Met Office is assuring citizens that it will continue to collaborate with other agencies and institutions to prepare for the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Mr. Thompson gave the assurance while addressing a press conference in Kingston today.

He says the Met Office will be using social media more to help alert citizens.

Additionally, the Met Office will be increasing its real time reporting platform.
