Prime Minister and Opposition Leader engage in Twitter spat over Covid-19 Vaccination Programme

by October 16th, 2021

A Twitter spat between Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Opposition Leader Mark Golding erupted this morning (October 16) over the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme.

Mr. Golding accused Mr. Holness of having no spirit of national unity, claiming that he was not invited to participate in the country’s vaccination strategy.

In response, Mr. Holness posted a copy of a letter addressed to Mr. Golding, dated September 1, 2021 outlining plans of a vaccination programme.

A section of Mr. Holness’ letter reads “I would like you to join me in participating in the community engagement effort,”

The letter further stated that the Office of the Prime Minister would provide further details of the launch.

In response, Mr. Golding pointed out that he received the letter, but did not receive a call from the Prime Minister’s Office regarding a launch date.

Both Mr. Golding and Mr. Holness have been criticised by several social media users for the war of words, especially when attention is needed on the actual efforts to tackle Covid, as well as other urgent issues.

The social media spat comes just days after the private sector pleaded with the country’s leaders to not turn the Covid situation into a political ploy.
