Prime Minister Andrew Holness has expressed concern over the presence of gangsters in deep-rural St. Elizabeth.

Statistics from the Jamaica Constabulary Force show that up to May 23, St. Elizabeth recorded 19 murders since the start of the year, when compared to 10 for the corresponding period last year.

Shootings, reported cases of rape and robberies have also increased in the parish.

Speaking at the handing over of a house under the Social Housing Programme in Schoolfield, in St. Elizabeth, yesterday (May 27), Mr. Holness said criminal elements are entrenching themselves in rural Jamaica.

He explained that the improvement of social conditions is vital to reducing criminal behaviour.
