Prime Minister defends decision to name new homeless facility in honour of Desmond Mckenzie

by May 27th, 2022

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has sought to defend the decision to name the new transitional facility for the homeless in Downtown Kingston, in honour of Local Government Minister Desmond Mckenzie.

The facility was officially opened today (May 27), after ground was broken for it’s construction in November 2019.

The decision to name the facility in honour of Mr. Mckenzie was made at a meeting of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, earlier this month.

However, questions have been raised about the reason behind the decision.

Speaking at the opening ceremony today (May 27), Mr. Holness said the decision is not unusual.

He said Mr. Mckenzie is deserving of the honour.

The facility, which was built at a cost of 140 million dollars, will offer temporary care to members of the homeless population, through treatment and intervention provided, as well as assist persons with being reintegrated into society.
