Property tax being reviewed

by April 5th, 2017

The country will hear next week how the government intends to respond to the increasing cries against the property tax hike faced by some land owners.

The government says Finance Minister Audley Shaw is to outline a review of the property tax regime next week.

Cabinet today (Apl 5) concluded deliberations  on the property tax review , after submission by the special review committee appointed on Monday.

The review of the property tax follows widespread condemnation of the tax hike being faced by Jamaicans across various segments of the society.

The new property tax valuation rates took effect on April 1.

Concerns have been raised in several quarters with some commentators saying this will result in increased rental rates for commercial and residential properties, and hardships on people including farmers and pensioners paying property taxes.

The information ministry in a statement this afternoon says details of the decisions and proposed adjustments and related matters will be made by Finance Minister Audley Shaw in parliament next week.

The ministry adds that instructions were also delivered to tax administration Jamaica and other relevant agencies for the fine-tuning and implementation of decisions made.

In the interim, Minister of Information, Ruel Reid is advising that no penalty or interest will accrue on tax assessed in respect of this financial year 2017/2018.
