Racers sprinter Zharnel Hughes held at gun point in attempted robbery

Racers Track Club sprinter Zharnel Hughes was the victim of attempted armed robbery.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon while he was getting ready for training at the Usain Bolt Track at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

According to reports, the sprinter while putting on his sneakers was approached by an armed robber who demanded he hand over his phone.

A startled Hughes ran off and was shot at by the assailant who was then challenged by a license firearm holder.

An exchange of gunfire ensued after which the robber fled. No one was injured in the ordeal.

Hughes, who represents Great Britain, previously attended Kingston College where he won the Boys Class 1 100m title at the 2014 ISSA Boys and Girls Athletics Championships in a record of 10.12 seconds.

The 22 year old, having missed out on the Rio Olympics with a knee ligament problem was a member of team Great Britain at the 2017 IAAF World Games in London where he made the semi-finals of the men’s 200m event.
