Raheem Sterling among six nominees short-listed for BBC sports personality of the year award

Jamaican-born England winger Raheem Sterling is among six nominees short-listed for the 2019 BBC sports personality of the year award.

Sterling who has been praised for his public stance against racism won the domestic treble of premier league, F.A Cup and league cup with Manchester city.

The 24 year old was also named the Football Writers’ Association player of the year.

Completing the shortlist are world 200 metres champion Dina Asher-Smith, Lewis Hamilton who won a sixth formula one driver’s title, cricketer Ben Stokes, Katarina Johnson- Thompson who took heptathlon gold at the IAAF World championships and Alun Wyn Jones who captained Wales to grand slam victory and became his country’s most capped player at the Rugby World Cup.
