Ravel Morrison and Leon Bailey named on Jamaica’s preliminary Gold Cup squad

Former Manchester United prodigy Ravel Morrison and Leon Bailey of German Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen  are in Jamaica’s preliminary squad for the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.

The roster of 40 also includes the likes of Daniel Johnson of English Championship club Preston North End, former national under 20 player Rashawn Dally of FC Cincinnati in the MLS and defender Jordan Scarlett of the New York Red Bulls USL team.

Adrian Marriapi of beaten FA Cup finalist Watford head a group high profile overseas based players which also includes Michael Hector (Sheffield Wednesday), Jamoi Topey (Bethlehem Steel), Darren Mattocks & Alvas Powell (FC Cincinnati), Damion Lowe (IK Start), Dever Orgill (MKE Ankaragücü) and Peter-Lee Vassell (LAFC).

The thirteen-man local aggregation consists of the Harbour View trio Kemar Bennett, Rennico Clarke and Ajeanie Talbot, Ladale Ritchie and Kevaughn Isaacs of Mount Pleasant FC, Javon East, Andre Lewis and Ricardo Morris of Portmore United, Amal Knight and Fabion McCarthy of UWI FC, Kaheem Parris, Alex Marshall (Cavalier), Tevin Shaw (Tivoli Gardens) and Jeadine White (Humble Lion).

The final 23 players will be announced by Concacaf the first week of June. Only injury related changes will be allowed, after the official announcement, up until 24 hours before each teams’ first match and any injury replacements must come from the preliminary 40-player roster.

The 2019 Gold Cup will be the biggest-ever edition of the event, with more participating nations (16 up from 12 in 2017), more host countries (three, including first-time matches in Costa Rica and Jamaica, and more stadiums (17 up from 14 in 2017, eight of which are in contention to become a 2026 FIFA World Cup venue).

 

In Group C, Honduras, the seeded team, will be at Jamaica’s National Stadium, to take on the Reggae Boyz, marking the first time the tournament is played in the Caribbean, while Curacao will take on El Salvador.
