A re-engagement of students across the country is one of the major objectives to be pursued by the government this financial year.

That’s according to Governor General Sir Patrick Allen.

He made the statement while presenting the throne speech at this morning’s (February 10) opening of parliament.

The Throne Speech outlines the priority programmes and policies to be pursued by government, during the new fiscal year.

The Governor General said while the Covid-19 pandemic has negatively disrupted life in Jamaica, government continues with strategies to mitigate the effects.

Education is one of the sectors to receive priority focus.

This year’s opening is taking place in strict adherence to the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 guidelines.

Measures implemented include a reduction in the number of parliamentarians and other dignitaries attending the ceremony.

The traditional ‘March to Gordon House’ also adhered to health protocols.

The ceremonial opening will be followed by a meeting of the House of Representatives this afternoon, at which the 2022/2023 Estimates of Expenditure will be tabled.
