Jamaica’s Reggae Girls fresh from their one nil win over Tournament host and Group A’ rivals Mexico in the Concacaf Women’s Championship on Monday night at the Estadio Universitario, are all set and ready to tackle the United States in their next assignment on Thursday for a place at the next FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. 

Both teams will meet in a top of the table clash on Thursday with the winner cementing a place in the semi-finals and also securing a place at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

They say cometh the hour, cometh the man, but in this case it’s cometh the woman and her name is Khadija ‘bunny’ Shaw.

The Manchester City striker was instrumental in Jamaica’s one-nil victory, rising high to head home the lone goal of the game in the 8th minute after latching onto Deniesha Blackwood’s freekick.

With this strike Shaw tied Jody Brown for most (Concacaf Women’s Championship) CWC goals by a Jamaican player with four.

The Jamaicans had the chance to extend their lead in the 35th minute when after a V.A.R review the referee ruled in favor of a penalty after Mexico’s Casandra Montero committed a handball in the area. 

However the resulting spot kick was blasted over the crossbar by Havana Solaun.

With the result, Jamaica earned their first win over Mexico in a Concacaf Women’s Championship match in four outings.

A pleased reggae girls coach Lorne Donaldson says the result was a fair one and in looking ahead says they will have to manage expectations.
