Reggae Girlz go down to Scotland in final warm up before World Cup

by May 28th, 2019

Top striker Khadijah ‘Bunny’ Shaw struck twice on Tuesday but could not prevent the Reggae Girls from going down 3-2 to fellow World Cup qualifiers Scotland in their final friendly international ahead of the 2019 FIFA showpiece event in France next month.

The Reggae Girlz, in front of a record over 18,000 spectators at Hampden Park, took an early lead when Shaw found the target on minute 15 with a powerful left-footed effort to shock the home crowd on hand for the Scots’ farewell match ahead of the World Cup.

However two glorious strikes from Erin Cuthbert on minute 29 and Caroline Weir in the 34th saw the home team into a 2-1 half time lead.

Shaw doubled her tally immediately after the interval but substitute defender Sophie Howard secured the win in the 67th minute when she headed past Nicole McClure.

A minute earlier Shaw suffered an injury and had to be substituted.

Assistant coach Lorne Donaldson revealed that the former Tennessee striker will be ok for the World Cup but Kaylor McKoy is to be evaluated after suffering a knee injury.

It was a first defeat in seven for Jamaica, ranked 33 places below Scotland in 53rd, but Shaw in particular showed they could cause problems to group opponents Australia, Italy and Brazil.

The Reggae Girls on Wednesday will on Wednesday head for London for a number of appearances and training before departing for Lyon. France.

Jamaica will face Brazil in their opening fixture in Group C while Scotland will take on England, also on June 9, in Group D that also comprises Argentina and Japan.
