With news that 24 Jamaican students fleeing war-torn Ukraine have made it to Poland, relatives in Jamaica are breathing a sigh of relief.

The students fled Ukraine after Russia invaded the country. Today marks the fifth day of war, as Ukrainians take up arms to defend their country.

Speaking with IRIE FM news, one woman, whose sister is among the group who crossed into Poland last night noted that she is grateful that her sibling is no longer in immediate danger.

She explains that since reports of Russia’s military assault on Ukraine, she and other members of her family have been trying to remain calm.

She says her family is hoping her sister and the other students will return to Jamaica quickly.
