Relief supplies to be given to flood ravaged residents of Lances Bay, Hanover

Relief supplies are to be provided for some 33 individuals, including nine children in Lances Bay, Lucea, Hanover, whose homes were flooded, after a river in the area overflowed its banks, yesterday (May 17).

Officials from the Labour Ministry, poor relief department and disaster officials of the Hanover Municipal Corporation visited the community, today (May 18).

It’s understood that, not much assistance could be rendered to the affected residents, due to more heavy rains today, and the officials were forced to leave the community.

A house belonging to a woman was destroyed. The houses are mostly made of board and little concrete.

Speaking with Irie FM News this morning, Parish Disaster Coordinator Kenisha Stenneth-Dunbar said the residents were given some assistance today.

She said relief supplies are to be provided for the affected residents tomorrow, adding that a team from the National Works Agency also visited the community.

It is understood that the some residents who were displaced have opted to stay with family and friends.

Others have refused to leave their homes, and are trying to salvage whatever items they can, from the flood damage.
