Repair works to be carried out on Charles Gordon market in St. James, following fire on Sunday

Mayor of Montego Bay Leeroy Williams says repair works are soon to be carried out on the main building of the Charles Gordon Market in St. James, after it was partially damaged by fire on Sunday (January 16).

The estimate of damage is 3 million dollars.

Three shops, made mainly of wood were destroyed and there was partial damage to one stall and 7 handcarts.

Speaking with Irie FM News, Mayor Williams said the works will begin as soon as investigations on the fire have been completed.

However, Mayor Williams said the affected vendors would not be able to receive assistance from the municipality.

Mayor Williams also expressed concern about the set up of the facility.

Meanwhile, Acting Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade Kerry-Gayl Forbes, says investigations continue into the cause of the fire.
