Road Safety Council urges Jamaicans not to be careless with their lives, as expiration of curfew offers newfound freedom

by March 19th, 2022

With the islandwide curfew now lifted, Jamaicans are being encouraged not to be careless, with what has been described as their newfound freedom.

It has been 2 days since the orders and COVID-19 containment measures, under the Disaster Risk Management Act were withdrawn, but the National Road Safety Council fears that with the expiration of the curfew, Jamaicans have become even more complacent regarding their safety on the nation’s roadways.

The concern follows the deaths of five people, who were killed in three separate motor vehicle crashes in Trelawny, Hanover and St. Elizabeth yesterday (March 19).

Speaking with IRIE FM news, Vice-Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones laments, that Jamaicans choose to act irresponsibly on the roadways at the expense of their safety and that of others.

Dr. Jones explains that yesterday’s road fatalities are another indication that the regulations for the new road traffic act must be passed swiftly.
