Road Safety Unit urges motorists to reduce their speed, as road deaths climb to 275

by July 31st, 2021

The Road Safety Unit is appealing to all motorists to reduce their speed, adhere to the Covid measures and save lives.

This appeal comes in the wake of 275 road fatalities, since the start of the year.

The RSU reported that there have been 48 multiple fatality crashes on the road network and these fatalities occurred on known black spots, as well as major motorways.

Statistics from the unit also highlight that, motorcyclists represented majority of road user deaths on the network, at 35 percent, followed by private motor vehicle drivers at 20 percent, pedestrians at 19 percent and private motor vehicle passengers at 13 percent.

Vulnerable road users, including motorcyclists, pedestrians and pillions, account for 63 percent of fatalities.

The unit is therefore imploring persons who fall into these categories to remain vigilant, and exercise caution on the roads.
