by April 11th, 2017

Customers of some prominent banks in the island, have fallen victim to an ATM scam, being carried-out allegedly by Romanian nationals.

Police have arrested one of the 4 Romanians, allegedly involved in the scam.

A search has been launched for the other 3 Romanians, as well as one Jamaican national said to be colluding with them.

Head of the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Branch, ACP Clifford Chambers says the scammers have targeted ATM’s in St. Ann, St. Catherine and Kingston.

He says, the police have obtained video surveillance footage of the scammers from a machine in Ocho Rios.

Meantime, ACP Chambers says the Romanian national who is in custody, in relation to the ATM scam, will be taken to court soon.

He adds that the police have discussed the matter with the affected banks and measures are being put in place, to better secure the machines.

This includes an audit of ATM’s island-wide.

He says the Romanian scammers have been convicted of fraud in other Caribbean countries, as well as in Canada, and that they should never have been allowed to enter Jamaica.

The police are reminding citizens to always be aware of their surroundings when using an ATM, and to cover the console when entering their pin.

Additionally, if persons activate the bluetooth feature on their smart phones, and the bluetooth picks up any activity near the ATM, it means the machine has been compromised, and they should alert the bank, immediately.
