Ronsford Beaton earns maiden Windies call-up vs Afghanistan

by May 19th, 2017

Guyanese fast bowler Ronsford Beaton is the lone uncapped player named in the West Indies squad for the threematch T20 International series against Afghanistan.

The 24 year old has picked up 31 wickets in 36 T20s with a best of 4 for 9, and has represented Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL.

Four Jamaicans including Jerome Taylor, who gets his first call-up since returning from retirement, have been included in the 13 man squad which is being led by Carlos Braithwaite.

The list of Jamaicans is completed by Marlon Samuels, Chadwick Walton and Rovman Powell.

Also making the team were Samuel Badree, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Lendl Simmons and Kesrick Williams. Barbadian all-rounder Jason Holder is being rested.

The matches are scheduled for June 2, 3 and 5 at Warner Park in St. Kitts.

This is the first time West Indies are hosting Afghanistan for a bilateral series. The series, which also consists of three ODIs, will be played concurrently with the Champions Trophy, which begins on June 1 in England. West Indies, who haven’t won a bilateral ODI series since 2014, beating Bangladesh at home, failed to qualify for the eight-team event.

The Windies selectors in the meantime also announced the 12-man squad for the match between the WICB’S President’s XI and Afghanistan also at Warner Park on May 30 ahead of the T20 series.

The full squad: Ashley Nurse (captain) Jonathan Carter, Johnson Charles, Sheldon Cottrell, Miguel Cummins, Andre Fletcher, Delorn Johnson, Kyle Mayers, Veersammy Permaul, Nicholas Pooran, Raymon Reifer and Devon Thomas.

Afghanistan famously beat West Indies, by six runs, the last time both sides squared up in a T20I, at the World T20 in India last year.
