Rovman Powell century powers Windies into Super Six

Jamaican all-rounder Rovman Powell hit his maiden One Day International century as West Indies beat Ireland by 52 runs to march into the Super Six stage of the ICC World Cup qualifying tournament.

Powell struck 7 fours and 7 sixes on his way to 101 to rescue the Windies from 58 for 4 to 257 for 8.

He also put on 86 for the 6th wicket with captain Jason Holder who completed his second consecutive half century of the tournament before he fell for 54 from 71 balls.

It came after the top order was crippled by Andy McBrine who picked up 2 for 45 and Tim Murtagh who snared 4 for 41.

Evin Lewis fell cheaply for nine, Chris Gayle 14, Shimron Hetmyer 36, Marlon Samuels 2 and Shai Hope 7.

Ireland in response were bowled out for 205 in the 47th over of their innings.

Kemar Roach, who dismissed both Ed Joyce (63) and Kevin O’Brien (38) in the same over and also took the key wickets of Paul Stirling (18) and Andy Balbirnie (9) early on, finished with figures of 4 for 27.

There were four wickets for Kesrick Williams as well, and two for the captain Jason Holder.
