RSU concerned that country may record more than 320 deaths for year

With 2 days remaining in 2017, the Road Safety Unit in the Ministry of Transport is reporting that the country is at risk of surpassing the projected 321 deaths on the nation’s roads due to traffic crashes.

Some 318 persons died on the nation’s roads since the start of the year.

The latest incident occurred this morning in Lacovia, St. Elizabeth where two motorcyclists died in the crash.

Director of the Road Safety Unit, Kenute Hare says while data projects 321 deaths for this year, that number could increase if motorists operate in a reckless manner.

Mr. Hare is again asking persons to put safety first, especially during the holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, the two men, killed in the head on motorcycle crash in Lavocia, St. Elizabeth have been identified as Joseph Reid and Jamar Anderson, both in their twenties and from the parish.

One pillion passenger was reportedly injured and was hospitalized.

Reports are that about 10:40 a.m the two motor bikes collided head on, in the vicinity of the Lacovia community centre.

Its reported that one of the motor cyclists was using a cell phone.

Both men were rushed to the Black River Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

And, seven people were reportedly injured in a three vehicle crash along a section of the Bustamante Highway this morning.

The incident took place sometime after 2 o’clock.

Speaking with Irie FM News Deputy Superintendent Errol Adams at Traffic Headquarters explains that a police service vehicle was involved in the crash.

He says thankfully no lives were lost.

The traffic cop also urged motorists to exercise caution when traversing the nation’s roads especially at this time.
