RSU examining market truck accident on Mandela Highway

by January 9th, 2018

The Road Safety Unit says its investigations into a fatal accident last night will examine how the accident could have been prevented.

A market truck overturned on the Mandela Highway killing two persons and leaving eleven others wounded.

Dead are 75-year-old, Winston Powell, a farmer of Copperwood district and, thirty-four year-old, Hubert Williams of Chapelton district, both in Clarendon.

Director of the Road Safety Unit Kenute Hare says there is a steep drop off at that section of the Mandela Highway, and the truck fell off the road.

Mr. Hare says motorists have made reports about that section of the roadway not being properly marked.

He notes that an analysis of the scene will be done tonight.

Reports from the Ferry police are that about 11:30 p.m., both men were passengers on a Leyland motor truck, laden with market produce, travelling into Kingston.

The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, which came to a stop in a ditch.

The truck tilted, and the passengers were covered by the market produce.

This brings to twelve, the number of people killed on the nation’s roads since the start of the year.
