Schools in Denham Town grappling with crime and violence

Schools in the Denham Town community of West Kingston are continuing to grapple with gun violence and gang conflict in the area.

This despite a Zone of Special Operation (ZOSO) being established in sections of Denham Town.

The latest flare up of violence saw the murder of a man and woman yesterday (Apl 18).

The situation has raised questions about how people in the community are coping with the constant violence.

About five schools, both primary and secondary are located in the troubled community.

Principal of the Denham Town Primary School, Eugenie Brown says persons at the institution have gotten used to violence in the area.

She says they have learnt to work around it.

She adds that students see school as a safe haven and are happy to attend.

The principal adds that if and when the situation gets really bad, they have measures to deal with it.

Some 613 students attend the Denham Town primary school.

In the meantime, Irie FM News understands that classes ended early at Tivoli Gardens High school and an emergency meeting was held.

It is understood that a 20-year-old past student was shot around 11 o’clock this morning, at the intersection of North Street and Charles.

A member of the school says all extra classes and after school activities were cancelled, as result of the violence.

Meanwhile the police in Denham Town have released the identities of a man and woman who were murdered by gunmen at a football match in the community of Golden Heights, Kingston 14 yesterday.

Dead are 58-year-old higgler Jennifer Bruce, and 20-old Taj Gordon also known as “Fret Dem”.

Two other people who were shot and wounded in the incident are receiving treatment at hospital.

Reports are that about 6:20 p.m., Gordon was among a group of men playing football, when a motorcar drove up and men armed with handguns alighted and opened gun fire at them.

When the shooting subsided Gordon, Bruce and the two other persons where found with gunshot wounds.

They were taken to hospital where Bruce and Gordon died the other two were admitted.

In the meantime, spokesperson for the Zone of Special Operations, Inspector Dian Bartley says the police are urging residents against large gatherings in the Denham Town community.

This in a bid to guard against reprisals as the shooting is said to be as a result of a gang conflict.
