Sections of the Hydel High Group of Schools destroyed by fire; loss estimated at $50M

Sections of the Hydel High Group of Schools in St. Catherine were destroyed by fire this morning (July 22).

Reports from the Jamaica Fire Brigade, are that about 7:57 am they received a call that the school was on fire.

Five units and 13 firemen were dispatched to the scene.

Upon reaching the location, it’s reported that the fire was confined to the Administration Block.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, however, damage is estimated at 50 million dollars.

Meantime, Irie Fm News has learnt that a decision has been taken by the Hydel Group of schools to continue with external examinations today, despite a massive fire at the school, this morning.

The source which spoke to our newsroom says despite being mentally affected the students agreed with the school’s administration to press on with the exam as the papers were not affected by the fire.

The exam papers were reportedly, not stored in that facility overnight and as such were not affected by the fire.

Firefighters are still carrying out cooling down operations at the school.
