by July 5th, 2018

Semoya Campbell, Ivan Henry and Jeanne Williams have been drafted into Jamaica’s squad for the inaugural IAAF Athletics World Cup in London next week following the withdrawal of Adidas sponsored athletes from the squad.

Adidas has informed its sponsored athletes that the bonuses they would ordinarily receive for appearing in competitions such as Diamond League or major championships will not apply in London.

Ordinarily an Adidas athlete would be given contractual dispensation by their sponsor to run in Nike kit for their country at certain competitions, but no such exemptions have been made for the Athletics World Cup.

It has led to a vast number of big name athletes pulling out of the 8 team tournament scheduled for next July 14 and 15.

Campbell replaces Natoya Goule in the women’s 800 metres while Henry replaces Fitzroy Dunkley on the men’s 4x400m team and Williams comes in for Danielle Williams.

Demish Gaye is the other athlete who has withdrawn from the team however his slot will be filled by another athlete who is already on the team.

The US team will also be significantly weakened. Adidas athlete Noah Lyles, the fastest man in the world this year, will be absent, as is world 60m champion Christian Coleman.

Justin Gatlin, Tori Bowie, Christian Taylor, Allyson Felix, Dalilah Muhammad, Tianna Bartoletta and Brianna McNeal are all skipping the meet.

Great Britain will be missing Zharnel Hughes, British champion Reece Prescod, Adam Gemili, Diamond League series winner CJ Ujah, 200m national champion Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Dina Asher-Smith, the British record holder for 100m and 200m.
