Several Jamaicans in Ukraine seek refuge underground as Russian invasion continues

by February 24th, 2022

As Russian forces continue a military assault on Ukraine, some Jamaicans in Ukraine have had to seek refuge underground.

There have been reports of missile strikes and explosions near major cities, resulting in a climbing death toll.

It is reported that at least 40 people have been killed.

One Jamaican student told IRIE FM news that he fears for his safety.

He explained that he was close by when an explosion occurred.

He said they are seeking refuge in the country’s underground train system.

Meantime, several persons claiming to be Jamaican nationals studying in Ukraine have taken to social media to voice their displeasure over the Government’s efforts to help them to leave Ukraine.

In a series of Twitter posts, the students, who say they managed to leave Ukraine earlier, claim the Jamaican Government did not do enough to help them.

The students who declined to speak with the media tweeted that a number of their colleagues are still in Ukraine.

Yesterday (February 24), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at least eight of the 42 Jamaican students had left Ukraine.

IRIE FM news tried to obtain a comment from Portfolio Minister Kamina Johnson Smith today, but all attempts were unsuccessful.
