Shai Hope among five named Wisden cricketers of the year

West Indies batsman Shai Hope has been named among Wisden’s five cricketers of the year for 2017.

This while the 2018 edition of Wisden continue to break new ground, with three members of the England women’s world cup-winning team named among the five.

Hope gets the nod following his match winning double-century in the West Indies’ famous Test win over England at Headingly.

For the second year running, Virat Kohli is named leading cricketer in the world – matching Virender Sehwag’s achievement in 2008 and 2009 – while India’s captain Mithali Raj, wins the leading women’s cricketer accolade.

The women named among the five cricketers of the year are Anya Shrubsole – who also becomes the first woman to feature on the cover – Heather Knight and Nat Sciver while Jamie Porter of English County side Essex , the seamer who helped lead them to a first county championship in 25 years complete the five.

For a second successive year, Kohli was crowned the leading male cricketer in the world while Raj, whose side lost a thrilling World Cup final to England in July, was the standout female player.

The criteria for the five Cricketers of the Year award revolve around performances in England, both in domestic and international cricket played in the country.

Afghanistan leg-spin sensation Rashid Khan was named the T20 player of the year.
