Jamaica’s women handed the country the perfect Independence Day gift by producing a brilliant run to capture the 4×100 meters title, on the penultimate day of track and field action at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The quartet of Brianna Williams on lead off, double sprint champion Elaine Thompson-Herah on the backstretch, 100 meters silver medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce on the third leg, and 100 meters bronze medalist Sherika Jackson on anchor, sped to a new national mark of 41.02 seconds to strike gold.

The USA were second in 41.45 seconds and Great Britain third in 41.88 seconds.

This was the first time since 2004 Jamaica’s women were winning the sprint relay at the Olympics.

Victory handed Elaine Thompson her third gold medal of the games while Fraser Pryce and Jackson collected their second medal.

Williams the reigning World Under 20 sprint double champion was winning her first senior medal.
