Slim Parliamentary majority may affect constitutional matters

by February 29th, 2016

Attorney-at-law, Bert Samuels, is of the view that parliament will be in a deadlock on constitutional matters, if the results of the general election remain at the slim majority.

The Jamaica Labour Party was declared winner last Thursday, following the preliminary count, with thirty-three seats to the P-N-P’s thirty.

The people’s national party regained a seat on Saturday, after the recount favoured, Dr Winston Green, for South East St Mary, over the J-L-P’s, Dr Norman Dunn.

The seat count presently stands at JLP thirty-two, to the P-N-P’s thirty-one.

Mr Samuels pointed to constitutional issues, such as the Caribbean Court Of Justice, which proved problematic, given that the J-L-P said it would not support the decision to leave the Privy Council.

A two thirds majority is required, to amend any constitutional law.
