Some Jamaicans living in the United States have expressed concern for their safety, following recent mass shooting incidents in that country.

In the latest incident, which occurred at the Robb Elementary School in Texas yesterday (May 24), nineteen young children and two adults were killed by an 18-year-old male.

The teen who had a handgun, a semi-automatic rifle and high-capacity magazines, opened fire at the school – which teaches children aged seven to 10 – before he was killed by law enforcement.

Earlier this month, at least 10 people were killed in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York by an alleged 18-year-old.  One person was also killed and 5 others wounded in a California church shooting incident.

Speaking with IRIE F-M news, one male Jamaican living in the U-S for almost 30 years says he has always been fearful, but yesterday’s school shooting has increased his level of fear.

He says his daughter is the same age as many of the children killed.

Meanwhile, a female Jamaican educator working in the US is stressing the need for reformed gun laws.

She also says focus should be placed on mental health.

Another Jamaican female living in the U-S says she has become paranoid.
